Nature Mondays is a 6-week series hosted by the Schlitz Audubon Nature Preschool. We meet once-a-week on Monday afternoons. This program is designed for children ages 4 – 6, and makes use of the Center’s outstanding nature trails, as well as the Preschool’s wonderful indoor and outdoor classrooms. In this series, Preschool teachers focus on nature experiences that are age appropriate and include plenty of time for play and social interaction. Nature Mondays are the perfect option for families who would like their children to share in the Nature Preschool experience, but prefer a short-term commitment!
Series 1 | Autumn Afternoons
September 18 – October 23 | 1:00pm – 3:30pm
During our Autumn Series, we explore the shoreline of Lake Michigan, study the ecosystem of a pond, learn about Monarch Butterflies and why autumn leaves change color. Come celebrate the changing landscape as summer gives way to autumn!
Series 2 | Winter in the Woods
November 6 – December 11 | 1:00pm – 3:30pm
In this series, we discuss the ways animals prepare for winter. Children learn about migration and hibernation, and observe how the afternoon light and temperatures change over the course of six weeks. Our final class includes a celebration of the approaching winter solstice.
Series 3 | Maple Sugar Mondays
February 5 – March 19 * | 1:00pm – 3:30pm
Join us for 6 weeks of maple sugar fun! As winter slowly gives way to spring, we will take advantage of the warmer days and cooler nights to tap a sugar maple tree. Over the next few weeks, we will collect the sap, visit the evaporator, sit by the campfire- and conclude with a pancake and maple syrup feast! * No class on Monday, February 26.
Series 4 | Springtime Transformations
April 16 – May 21 | 1:00pm – 3:30pm
Get outside and experience this magical time of year! As the winter ice melts, spring wildflowers emerge, and migrating birds return from the south. We will celebrate the arrival of spring with visits to the ponds, prairie, and changing lakeshore. Students will seek out songbirds and tadpoles and devote lots of time to exploring outdoors.
