Woodpeckers: Masters of the Drum
Adults, Birding Academy, Guided Hikes
While many of our feathered inhabitants head south to warmer weather, Wisconsin’s hardiest birds stick around and endure, perhaps even thrive, through the cold winter months. Our state’s woodpeckers are well-suited to completing this difficult challenge!
During this seminar, you’ll learn about the species found here including the Downy, Hairy and Red-bellied Woodpeckers. You’ll discover the adaptations woodpeckers use to survive winter and their special attributes that allow them to drum, chisel and fleck their way through the forest. So unique among Wisconsin’s birds, no others could withstand the jarring force of excavation and drumming! You’ll also learn about our newest citizen science project focused on researching woodpeckers along our Woodland Loop trail.
Join Associate Director of Education AJ Grill and Restoration Ecologist Colin Goyette for a short indoor presentation on woodpeckers before heading out to our forested landscape in search of these resilient birds and the traces they leave behind. Binoculars are encouraged for this program, and we will have some binoculars on hand to lend should you need them.
