Nature Mondays

Nature Mondays is a six-week series premiering in Fall 2016, and is hosted by the Schlitz Audubon Nature Preschool. We meet once-a-week on Monday afternoons. This program is designed for children ages 4 – 6, and makes use of the Center’s outstanding nature trails, as well as the Preschool’s wonderful indoor and outdoor classrooms. In this series Preschool teachers focus on nature experiences that are age appropriate, and include fun and lasting life lessons involving flora and fauna. Nature Mondays are the perfect option for families who would like their children to share in the Nature Preschool experience, but prefer a short-term commitment!

Series 1 | Autumn Afternoons
September 19 – October 24 | 1:00pm – 3:30pm
* This Nature Mondays series is now full. Parents are welcome to reserve spots for future sessions. *
During our Autumn Series, we explore the shoreline of Lake Michigan, study the ecosystem of a pond, measure wildflowers in the prairie, and discover the microscopic world beneath decomposing logs. Children will also learn about Monarch Butterflies and why autumn leaves change color.

Series 2 | Winter in the Woods
November 7 – December 12 | 1:00pm – 3:30pm
In this series, we discuss the ways animals prepare for winter. Children learn about migration and hibernation, and observe how the landscape, including the afternoon light, changes over six weeks. Our final class includes a celebration of the winter solstice (ten days early).

Series 3 | Maple Sugar Mondays
February 27 – April 3 | 1:00pm – 3:30pm
Join us for 6 weeks of maple sugar fun! As winter slowly gives way to spring, we will take advantage of the warmer days and cooler nights to tap a sugar maple tree. Over the next few weeks we will collect the sap, visit the evaporator, sit by the campfire- and conclude with a pancake and maple syrup feast!

Series 4 | Springtime Transformations
April 17 – May 22 | 1:00pm – 3:30pm
Get outside and experience this magical time of year! As the winter ice melts, spring wildflowers emerge, and migrating birds return from the south. We will celebrate the approach of spring with visits to the ponds, prairie, and changing lakeshore. Students will seek out tadpoles, songbirds, and the elusive spring skunk cabbage. We will create art, music, play games, and devote lots of time to exploring outdoors. This series concludes with a spring celebration.
