Bird Conservation and Coffee Seminar
Adults, Birding Academy, Guided Hikes, Raptors
Is there anything quite so ubiquitous about our everyday lives like birds and coffee? In this seminar, explore the complex and interwoven relationship between coffee cultivation and avian ecology. This journey will guide you through an overview of how coffee makes it from seed to cup, the best methods for choosing a bird-friendly coffee, and how the coffee industry affects migratory birds, including those found in your backyard.
While sampling bird-friendly coffees, enjoy a visit from one of our raptor ambassadors whose wild cousins migrate thousands of miles each year to coffee-growing regions. We will end with a short guided hike to practice identifying native species, some of which have returned to Wisconsin from their own migration.
This seminar is led by Raptor Educator Cheyenne Smith and Wisconsin Master Naturalist Matt Ehresman. Cheyenne has over 8 years of experience in the coffee industry as a barista and a coffee educator, while Matt spent over 17 years in the coffee industry as a q-grader, roaster, and coffee farmer. Both have worked on citizen science projects about birds and have led education programs on those topics.
This program will take place both indoors and outdoors.
