Great Lakes: Liquid of Life
Water is the liquid of life, and Lake Michigan is one of the largest sources of fresh water on the planet! In this all-day program students gain a greater appreciation for our Great Lakes. From our 60-foot tower, where miles of the lake are visible, students grasp the vastness of Lake Michigan’s dimensions, its Ice Age origins, and its significance for both our region and the world. We use historical maps and diagrams to better understand our glaciated past. At the beach, students investigate threats to Lake Michigan’s health by analyzing litter on the shore and testing for contaminates, water temperature, and pH. Through these activities, students learn what causes pollution in Lake Michigan and what we can do to care for the lake.
