Schlitz Audubon Nature Center is pleased to announce that Helen Boomsma has been named Executive Director. Boomsma brings to the role more than 20 years of varied experience in leadership, fundraising, and community relations, often related to education initiatives. Most recently, she was Vice President of Development and Community Relations at the YMCA of Metropolitan Milwaukee. Prior to this, she worked with Marquette University for 11 years, serving as the Senior Director of Development and Academic Liaison in University Advancement.
“We are very excited to have Helen lead our organization, as she is clearly passionate about Schlitz Audubon’s mission,” said John Grunau, Schlitz Audubon’s Board President. “As we begin to implement our 15-year Conservation Plan, Helen’s strong background in fundraising is critically important. The search committee appreciated Helen’s belief that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts, making us confident in her ability to provide inspiration and strong leadership to the Center’s talented and committed staff.”
Upon accepting the position, Boomsma stated, “I am thrilled to join Schlitz Audubon Nature Center, a very special place to me. My vision over the coming months and years is that Schlitz Audubon will be more widely recognized as a premiere nature center in Greater Milwaukee and beyond. I look forward to working with staff, board, donors, and volunteers. Together we will bring environmental education to new and diverse audiences and meaningfully engage the community through partnerships. We will continue to preserve our land’s distinct habitats and cultivate environmental stewards of the world.”
Helen is a graduate of UW-Milwaukee and Alverno College, and lives in Wauwatosa with her husband and three sons. She will officially join the organization on May 1.
