Wisconsin Moss and Lichen ID Workshop
Uncover the hidden world of Southeastern Wisconsin moss and lichen, living organisms that have fascinating relationships with each other and the forest around them. Through a presentation, discover their habitats, life cycle, and what makes these organisms so unique. On a guided hike, we will look for the species that can be found on the property. We will collect a few specimens to observe the structures up-close using a stereoscope back in the classroom. You will leave the workshop with new knowledge of moss and lichen, as well as a guide to the most common species that can be found in our region.
Environmental Educators Jim Thielke and Melanie Ziolecki are leading this workshop. Jim is passionate about sharing his knowledge of Wisconsin flora. He has a degree in Plants and Fungal Biology from UW-La Crosse. Melanie loves education on niche subjects and the relationships between all living organisms. She has a degree in Ecological and Organismal Biology from UW-Oshkosh.
This workshop will take place both indoors and outdoors.
