Port Washington Avian Sanctuary
Adults, Birding Academy, Field Trips, Guided Hikes
Nestled between South Beach Park and Coal Dock Park in historic downtown Port Washington, lies a new and hidden gem: the Port Washington Avian Sanctuary
Spring should see the resurgence of trailside native plantings and the return of migratory birds. We’ll traverse the easy and level trails of these two parks to observe and investigate wildlife activity at this birding hotspot – there are over 140 bird species listed here on ebird! We’ll also discuss the rich and fascinating history of the town, including the occurrence of shipwrecks in the harbor.
This field trip begins and ends at Coal Dock Park in Port Washington. You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the park. Restroom facilities may not be open at this time so please plan accordingly. You’ll come away with a better understanding of local bird life and the importance of maintaining critical habitat for migrating wildlife. Details and exact meeting location will be emailed to registered participants one week prior to the trip. No additional entrance fees are required.
Your guide for the morning will be Director of Education Tom Finley, avid explorer, birder, and nature enthusiast. Tom has led many field trip experiences for the Center over years and he looks forward to sharing a delightful day with you!
