Guided Bird Hike: Birds of the South Ravine
Sunday, November 8 | 9:00a-10:30a
November is a transitional time in the birding world across Wisconsin. Most of the neotropical migrants have made their way back to warmer wintering grounds far south of here. But many other species who reside further north for summer breeding season are on the move to locations along Lake Michigan, including Schlitz Audubon. Our lakeside geography and diverse habitat types make the Center an ideal wintering spot for these birds. During this guided hike, we’ll have the opportunity to observe Dark-eyed Juncos, American Tree Sparrows, Red and White-breasted Nuthatches, and much more.
This field experience is ideal for beginning and seasoned birders alike. Build your skillset by learning how to locate and identify birds from our trails; we will focus on identification characteristics such as size, shape, color, pattern, behavior, song, and habitat preference. There will also be plenty of time to practice looking and listening for birds to get a better view without disturbing them.
This outdoor hike is led by Environmental Educator and experienced birder Laine Cotteleer. She loves to share her passion for Wisconsin’s native flora and fauna with people of all ages. As a lifelong birder, she continues to hone her craft and skills with each program she teaches.
Bring your binoculars, favorite field guide or app, and we will meet in the Great Hall. This program will take place entirely outdoors. In the case of inclement weather, a portion of the program will take place indoors.
