Field Adventure: Horicon Marsh and Boat Tour

Join us for a day-long visit to the premier wetland in the Midwest – beautiful Horicon Marsh. Spring migration welcomes the return of thousands of birds to the marsh for the summer nesting season. We will explore this Wetland of International Importance by bus, foot, and boat! In a special twist to this popular excursion, we will charter a bus to and from the marsh and supplement our day with a 1-hour guided pontoon boat tour of the marsh from Blue Heron Landing in Horicon. A boxed lunch will be provided by Blue Heron Landing.
As the largest freshwater cattail marsh in the United States, Horicon is home to over 260 bird species and other diverse wildlife. We’ll first visit the Wisconsin DNR Scenic Overlook for a general interpretation before our stop at Blue Heron Landing, where we will take the 11:00am Daily Sightseeing Tour. Following our lunch, we will travel to the north side of the marsh along Hwy 49 to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service Auto Tour Route. We will have the opportunity to observe many species of birds in their natural habitat, while discovering unique behaviors and adaptations for their survival.
Your guides for the day will be Director of Education Tom Finley and Environmental Educator Laine Cotteleer, who have worked together on numerous visits to the marsh and birding walks. You’ll come away with a better understanding of resident bird life and the importance of maintaining critical habitat for migrating wildlife. They look forward to sharing a delightful day with you!
This field adventure begins and ends at Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. Restroom facilities will be available at the Center and the three stops in Horicon, but not on the bus. The bus trip will last about 60 minutes on the way there and 75 minutes on the way back. Additional trip details and lunch orders will be sent out two weeks prior to the date. All fees are included in the ticket price.
