Young Writers Workshop
Art, Families, Wheelchair Accessible
Monday, July 20 – Thursday, July 23
Middle-school aged writers will immerse themselves in this four-day workshop surrounded by the outdoors to inspire their writing. With the guidance and support of experienced teachers, participants will receive prompts and examples to enhance their motivation and creativity. Word art, sketches, and all genres of writing are encouraged, and participants will routinely share their writing informally throughout the day or, optionally, during the “Author’s Chair” at the end of each day.
On the last day of the workshop, participants will share their favorite pieces of writing with their families and friends at a celebration. Additionally, if the participants would like, their favorite piece will be “published” in a do-it-yourself, teacher-made anthology.
Leading this workshop is Wisconsin-licensed educator Rose O’Leary. She has been teaching for over 20 years, with experience in a variety of grade levels and settings and is currently a 6th-grade teacher at a local public school. Rose has been involved in outdoor-inspired youth summer writing camps in Madison and is bringing this model to the Center.
Participants should bring a notebook and their preferred writing utensils. They should wear comfortable clothes and closed-toe shoes that can get dirty and should bring a water bottle, bug spray, and outdoor gear, including but not limited to hats, sweatshirts, and a rain jacket. Optionally, participants can bring binoculars or a magnifying glass to assist when exploring outdoors.
Additionally, participants should bring a lunch. There is no refrigerator or microwave available. Please do not bring peanuts or any other nut products. Snacks may be brought as well.
This program is designed for children going into 6th through 8th grade. This program will take place both indoors and outdoors.
Members: $215 per participant | Non-members: $250 per participant
