Phenology Hike: Autumn Glory
Friday, October 18, 2024 | 10:00 am - 11:30 am
$17.00 – $23.00Phenology is the study of the timing and occurrence of cyclical patterns and events in nature. When do birds migrate and nest? When do flowers bloom and leaves drop? Nearly all plants and animals follow the meteorological cues of daylight, temperature, and rainfall for their survival. This critical field of research allows us to study how living organisms respond to environmental changes, including climate change.
On this guided hike, we’ll visit the Woodland Loop and other forest areas of the property to investigate and discuss recent patterns. Participants may notice that tree color intensity can vary in autumn. We’ll consider recent temperature fluctuations and the abundant rains of summer and how this affect wildlife. We’ll look for and discuss animals preparing for winter: migration, layers of fur and fat reserves being built, and hibernation commencing. After this hike, you will have a basic understanding of fall phenology.
Your guide for the morning will be Director of Learning Tom Finley, who has been investigating the flora and fauna of Schlitz Audubon for over twenty years.
