Lion’s Den Gorge Field Trip: Spring Birding on the Bluff

Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve in Ozaukee County is one of the most pristine stretches of undeveloped land along the Lake Michigan shoreline in our region. A true gem of the park system, the 73-acre property includes a half mile of nearly 100-foot scenic yet fragile bluffs which look out onto Lake Michigan: tremendous viewing opportunities abound. Being situated on the Lake Michigan shoreline, birds concentrate here during migration, both spring and fall. Lion’s Den Gorge is also adjacent to a 44-acre wetland complex owned by United States Fish and Wildlife Service, so preserved for enhancing populations of migratory wetland birds and other wildlife.

During our day, we will traverse this landscape of many habitats, walking the bluffs as we bird, and descend down into the gorge via stairways to walk along the Lake Michigan shoreline. Forested areas and timely thickets are great locations for songbirds. Your guides for this experience will be Director of Education Tom Finley and experienced birder Michelle Allison, both of whom have led numerous trips to this preserve. A recently completed Pavilion area with restrooms and picnic facilities allows for a richer and more substantial experience.

The field trip begins and ends at the Lion’s Den Gorge Nature Preserve. Please bring your own lunch, snacks and water. There should be restroom facilities available. Details will be emailed to registrants prior to the program.
