Guided Bird Hike: Avian Insectivores

Sunday, July 12, 2026 | 8:00 am - 9:30 am
$17.00 – $23.00

Almost all bird species hunt and consume insects at some point in their lives. The relationship birds have with insect populations shapes their habitat use, migration patterns, behavior, and overall survival. During this guided hike, we’ll observe how different species utilize unique adaptations to hunt for invertebrates, from ground foraging thrushes to acrobat swallows in the sky.

This field experience is ideal for beginning and seasoned birders alike. Build your skillset by learning how to locate and identify avian insectivores from our trails; we will focus on identification characteristics such as size, shape, color, pattern, behavior, song, and habitat preference. There will also be plenty of time to practice looking and listening for birds to get a better view without disturbing them.

This outdoor hike is led by Environmental Educator and experienced birder, Aubrey Fulsaas. Her collegiate studies focused on Behavioral Ecology and Animal Behavior. She is a Wisconsin Master Naturalist Instructor, a Certified Nature and Forest Therapy Guide, and above all, a passionate birder.

Bring your binoculars, favorite field guide or app, and we will meet in the Great Hall. This program will take place entirely outdoors. In the case of inclement weather, a portion of the program will take place indoors.
