Whether you call them lightning bugs or fireflies, these bioluminescent beetles light up our summer nights. Why do they flash? What makes them glow? Naturalist Moya Mowbray will teach you how to be a firefly citizen scientist for Firefly Watch. Venture to the lightning bug hotspots around the Center to observe and record firefly data. You will learn how to identify common species by their flash patterns! Take this training back home and count the fireflies in your own backyard to help scientists understand a little more about nature’s fireworks.
This program will take place entirely outdoors. We will practice social distancing when we are able to, but because of the nature of small-group programming, it will not always be possible. For the health and safety of all, participants must wear a mask when you are within six feet of others. Please do not attend if you are sick or believe you have been exposed to the virus.
