This immersive seminar invites bird lovers to slow down and experience the natural world through field illustration. Held completely outdoors, we’ll begin on the Veranda with a drawing warm-up of one of our live American Kestrel ambassadors, then head out on the trails for more guided exercises and quiet time in nature. While birds are the primary focus, we will encourage you to sketch whatever captures your attention, including plants, landscapes, or other creatures. You will build confidence in visual journaling and explore how to observe and capture posture, movement, field marks, and environmental context in real time. No prior drawing experience required, just curiosity, patience, and a love of being outside.

Loose paper and some basic drawing materials will be provided. Please bring your own journal or sketchbook, as well as any other drawing materials you would like to use.

Raptor Educator Cheyenne Smith is leading this seminar. With her life-long experience in nature and the arts, she has illustrated two children’s books. Her work utilizes graphic illustration and mediums such as printmaking, pyrography, and watercolor.

This seminar will take place entirely outdoors. In the case of inclement weather, this program will be rescheduled for Sunday, June 21 at the same time.
