Field Adventure: Lakeshore State Park
Adults, Birding Academy, Guided Hikes
Winter along the lakefront offers numerous opportunities to marvel at nature’s beauty. Few are more exciting than the return of northern ducks which spend a “warmer” winter here. Arriving from as far away as Canada, we welcome back Common and Red-breaster Mergansers, Goldeneyes, Scaup, Bufflehead and much more.
On this adventure, will hike and explore the serene winter landscape of Lakeshore State Park in downtown Milwaukee. Trails are well-marked and generally flat and offer fantastic views in any direction. We’ll also visit the pier at nearby Discovery World. We will learn about the history of these more recent additions to Milwaukee, and hopefully view a variety of birds and other animals. If snow is present, we should see many animal tracks and signs as well.
The field trip begins and ends at Lakeshore State Park. One portable toilet is on-site and also at nearby attractions. No state park sticker is required. You will need to provide your own transportation to and from Lakeshore State Park. Parking is along adjacent roadways, some of which have hourly fees. Your guide is longtime birder and Milwaukee enthusiast, Director of Education Tom Finley. Further meeting and trip details will be emailed to registered participants prior to the trip. This program will take place entirely outdoors.
