Fall Phenology Hike: Autumn Glory

Friday, October 9, 2026 | 10:00 am - 11:30 am
$17.00 – $23.00

Phenology is the study of the timing and occurrence of cyclical patterns and events in nature. Nearly all plants and animals follow the meteorological cues of daylight, temperature, and rainfall for their survival. During the colorful months of autumn, our eyes are drawn to the forest. We will hike the Woodland Loop and other forested areas to investigate and discuss recent patterns, such as variations in tree color intensity, recent temperature fluctuations, and seasonal rain events. We will also consider how animals are preparing for winter: some begin migrating or hibernating while others build reserves of fat or layers of fur.

Phenology enables the study of small-scale and large-scale biomonitoring. This is a critical field of research which allows us to study how living organisms respond to environmental changes. Growing awareness of climate change and strong seasonal variations are keys to our understanding about how – or whether – nature can adapt.

Your guide for the morning will be our Director of Education, Tom Finley, who has been investigating the flora and fauna of Schlitz Audubon for over 20 years.

This program will take place entirely outdoors.
