Birding Along the Ice Age Trail at Lapham Peak

Wisconsin’s Ice Age Trail is over 1,000 miles long and Lapham Peak in Delafield does an impressive job of preserving some of that land. Lapham Peak, the highest point in Waukesha County, is named for renowned Wisconsin naturalist Increase A. Lapham.

The mature and diverse woods of Lapham Peak are home to many bird species during the late winter and early spring: both year-round residents and some early spring migrants. Dark-eyed Juncos, Eastern Blue Jays, Northern Cardinals, and Black-capped Chickadees are common here, to name a few. We will walk the fields and woods to observe bird activity.

Your guide for the morning will be Director of Education Tom Finley, who has hiked these trails for many years. Expect about two miles of hiking over moderately rocky and hilly terrain. The field trip begins and ends at Lapham Peak State Forest. All participants should be in good cardiovascular health. Please bring your own snacks and water. A vehicle admission sticker is required.

Further details and directions will be emailed to registered participants the week prior to the trip.
