Broad-winged Hawk
Buteo platypterus

A county sheriff found Nicco on the side of the road and suspected that he had been hit by a car. He was sent to a wildlife rehabilitation center and was found to have multiple broken bones. His calm demeanor made him a perfect fit for education and Nicco moved to Schlitz Audubon in 2015.

Hatch Year:  2014

Average Weight: ½-1 ½ pounds | Nicco: 1 pound

Wingspan: 32-40 inches

Lifespan in the Wild: 12 years

Lifespan in Captivity: 20 years

Fun Fact: Nicco’s name translates to “victory,” a name given to him after he survived an automobile collision.

About my Species: Broad-winged Hawks are native to Wisconsin but are rarely seen. They prefer to spend their time in the Northern half of the state, where the forests are dense enough for them to hide. Every year, thousands of these birds gather to migrate to South America for the winter; a spectacle celebrated by many festivals in September.
