Vernal Equinox Hike
Join us on a hike to experience the vernal, or spring, equinox, which marks the beginning of astronomical spring in the northern hemisphere. This day is celebrated across many cultures as a time for renewal and rebirth, and it represents the continued lengthening of days and return of light that nurtures life.
During our hike, the Sun passes directly over the celestial equator on its northward journey precisely at 9:36 am. This point in time is usually associated with 12 hours of day and night, and the tilt of the Earth’s axis is pointed neither directly at nor away from the Sun. We will see what animals and plants are emerging from a winter rest and afterwards enjoy some hot chocolate around the fireplace in the Hearth Room.
Leading the hike is Director of Education Tom Finley. He has been teaching at the Center for 24 years, and enjoys hiking and sharing the significance of spring in Wisconsin.
