Geology of Lake Michigan
Friday, December 6, 2024 | 10:00 am - 11:30 am
$17.00 – $23.00Lake Michigan – the central feature of Schlitz Audubon Nature Center and the inspiration for countless journeys, expressions of art, and quiet reflection. Derived from the Algonquin word Michigama, meaning “great water,” the lake owes its roots to the conclusion of the last realm of glacial activity over 14,000 years ago. The formation of the Great Lakes and the varying water levels have greatly affected human settlement, travel and commerce.
Our program will see us hike down the 100-foot bluff to the Nipissing Terrace and finally to the water’s edge itself. We’ll investigate the rocks, plants, and wildlife of this vast ecosystem. For those interested, we will also climb the 60-foot tower for an expansive overview of the lake. Learn about the glacial past and the even deeper geologic foundations underlying the lake, over 400 million years ago!
Your guide for the morning will be Director of Learning Tom Finley, who has a great passion for studying the rocks along our waterfront and traversing the ever-shifting shoreline.
