Phenology Hike: Season of the Frost Moon
Thursday, November 7, 2024 | 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm
$17.00 – $23.00Phenology is the study of the timing and occurrence of cyclical patterns and events in nature. When do birds migrate and nest? When do flowers bloom and leaves drop? Nearly all plants and animals follow the meteorological cues of daylight, temperature, and rainfall for their survival. This critical field of research allows us to study how living organisms respond to environmental changes, including climate change.
On this guided hike, we’ll journey through the Central Wetlands Loop and visit a number of our ponds and nearby fields to investigate and discuss recent patterns. November is a time of transition in the natural world. Plants begin their dormancy, and we see the last of the true hibernators as photoperiod decreases. The marked change in daylight hours is pronounced and temperatures may fluctuate wildly, and we often see the first measurable snow. After this hike, you will have a basic understanding of late fall phenology at the Center.
Your guide for the evening will be Director of Learning Tom Finley, who has been investigating the flora and fauna of Schlitz Audubon for over twenty years.
