Mycology Workshop

Sunday, September 21, 2025 | 9:30 am - 12:00 pm

$50.00 – $65.00

,

Join Environmental Educator Melanie Ziolecki to learn about the fascinating world of fungi. We will start with a short presentation about mycology (the study of fungi and mushrooms) to learn about their life cycle, ecological importance, and how humans have cultivated and utilized these organisms.

Following the presentation, special guest Justin Starke from StarkeShrooms will give a hands-on tutorial on cultivating fungi in your own home. During this portion you will learn the sustainable practice of growing edible mushrooms in a common plastic bucket. You will have mushrooms ready to harvest and eat in just a few weeks! To see what this looks like, you can find photos from past workshop participants here.

The workshop will conclude with an optional, short hike to search for fungi along our trails. You will leave the workshop with deeper insights into how mushrooms grow in both natural and artificial environments. You will also be able to identify an array of mushrooms found at the Center and perhaps even in your own backyard.

Please wear clothes that you don’t mind getting a little dirty. All materials for creating your mushroom bucket will be provided.
