Hiking the Ice Age Trail: Bald Bluff Unit
Wednesday, June 26, 2024 | 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
$50 – $65Adults, Field Trips, Guided Hikes
We’ll hike the picturesque landscape of the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest at Bald Bluff, which features scenic views of Kettle Moraine Oak Opening State Natural Area. With over 22,000 acres of protected land, the Southern Kettle Moraine offers a stunning array of forested hills, rolling fields and beautiful kettle lakes. A generally low and wet region, Bald Bluff stands at over 1,000 ft. above sea level; one of the highest locations in Jefferson County.
In the morning we’ll trek along the Ice Age Trail. Later we’ll head over to the Emma Carlin and hike the trail from the other side. You’ll observe seasonal wildflowers and see and hear a variety of birds species, perhaps even a few nesting in the area.
Throughout the day, you’ll learn some history of the region’s indigenous people, how Bald Bluff got its name, and important geological facts and features. Your guide for the day will be Director of Education Tom Finley, who has traversed the IAT for many years looking for signs of the Ice Age.
Expect to hike about 4 miles in total, over sometimes rugged and undulating terrain. Please bring your own lunch, snacks and water. Toilets are available nearby at Emma Carlin Trail Head, but not at Bald Bluff itself. Specific directions to where we’ll meet in the Palmyra area will be emailed to registered participants the week prior to the trip. A DNR park sticker is required in the State Forest. Kiosks for day passes are also available.
Members: $50 | Non-Members: $65
