Beginner Fossil ID Workshop
The Lake Michigan shoreline hosts a myriad of captivating rocks and some very unique fossil specimens from the Silurian and Devonian periods. Many aquatic species that called Wisconsin home 400 million years ago can be discovered right here on our beach! In this workshop, you will first learn how to identify these fossils by viewing our preserved collection. Afterwards, we will hike to the lakefront to search for the fossils that have been washed up on the shore.
Associate Director of Education AJ Grill has been hunting and collecting fossils along the shores of Lake Michigan for 10 years and has a passion for all things Lake Michigan – past and present. He has also spearheaded collaborations between staff at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee Thomas A. Greene Geologic Museum and Schlitz Audubon Nature Center staff.
This program will take place both indoors and outdoors.
