Green Future
When our environmental education center was constructed, it won Wisconsin’s first Gold LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification for its sustainability and energy conservation. Students take part in a scavenger hunt to find these design features, then receive a tour detailing each sustainable practice used in the building’s construction — from the fly ash in the foundation to the solar panels on the roof. Finally, students join in a recycling relay, to learn what materials can be composted, recycled, or end up in a landfill. Students leave the Center with a greater appreciation for eco-friendly practices and a plan to live their own lives a little more sustainably.
