Prairies of the Southern Kettle Moraine Field Trip
Wednesday, August 17, 2022 | 10:00 am - 2:00 pm
$45.00 – $60.00The Kettle Moraine State Forest South Unit offers a beautifully preserved landscape that harkens back to Wisconsin’s epic geologic past. Join Director of Education Tom Finley on a visit to view some of the unique prairies of this region. Created near the end of the last Ice Age, some 10 – 12,000 years ago, there are both remnants and restored prairies that flourish with floristic beauty.
Our day begins at the Southern Kettle Moraine headquarters just west of Eagle. After a brief stop at the visitor center, we’ll drive to the Scuppernong Prairie and the Kettle Moraine Low Prairie. After lunch we’ll hike part of the Ice Age Trail, visiting sandy lowlands which feature prickly pear cactus, star moss, and long-haired hawkweed.
Overall, expect to hike several miles over sometimes rugged and occasionally steep terrain, but also to be rewarded with fresh air and stunning vistas.
The field trip begins and ends at the Southern Kettle Moraine State Forest. A vehicle admission sticker is required. Further details and directions will be emailed to registered participants the week prior to the trip. Pit toilets are available.
Members: $45 | Non-Members: $60
