Guided Hikes, Adults

The Northern Kettle Moraine is renowned for its scenic beauty and impressive geologic features. Join Director of Education Tom Finley as we traverse Dundee Mountain, the Greenbush Trails and Butler Lake.

The day begins at the Butler Lake Trail Area. We’ll take a short hike on the snake-like Butler Lake esker portion of the Ice Age Trail. An esker is sure sign that a large river once flowed underneath the ice sheet, depositing debris along the way! We then head due west to nearby Long Lake south picnic area. We’ll work our way through field and forest on our hike to the top of Dundee Mountain – the highest glacial kame in the region which offers a scenic view of Long Lake. A kame (or Moulin kame) is a conical shaped hill consisting of sand and gravel, typically formed at the edge of retreating ice sheets; in this case about 200 feet high. They are the remnants of once-massive flows of water through holes in the ice. Famed Holy Hill is one such example.

After a bag lunch at the picnic grounds there, we head north to the Greenbush Trails for an afternoon of scenic hiking along the beautiful Kettle Moraine to view the kettles and moraines! It is sure to be a wonderful day.

Overall, expect to hike several miles over sometimes rugged and occasionally steep terrain, and be rewarded with fresh clean air and stunning vistas.

The field trip begins and ends at the Northern Kettle Moraine State Forest. In order to maintain social distancing, you will need to provide your own transportation to and from the location and the three areas we plan to explore. Please bring your own lunch, snacks and water. A vehicle admission sticker is required. Pit toilets are available. Further details and directions will be emailed to registered participants the week prior to the trip.

We will practice social distancing when we are able to, but because of the nature of small-group programming, it will not always be possible. For the health and safety of all, participants must wear a mask when you are within six feet of others. Please do not attend if you are sick or believe you have been exposed to the virus.

Members: $45 | Non-Members: $60
