Menomonee Park Field Trip

Sunday, August 18, 2024 | 10:00 am - 2:00 pm

$50.00 – $65.00

Explore the various habitats at Menomonee Park located in Waukesha County. This park has nearly 470 acres of land, including hardwood forests, wetlands, and the quarry pond. The northern part of the park is deemed as the Best Woods, where you will be immersed among the maple trees, woodpeckers, and so much more.

We’ll start the trip by learning how to use iNaturalist and eBird to help bolster citizen science efforts. Afterwards, we will hike through the Best Woods in search of migrating bird species, practice tree identification, and experience the phenological changes signaling the beginning of fall. Later in the day, we will hike near the quarry pond and the western trails to try and catch a glimpse of migrating ducks and other animals that occupy the area.

At the end of the trip, you will have the skills to successfully identify Wisconsin flora and fauna and how to record data in local citizen science projects. Your guide for the day will be Family Programs Manager Cassie Rincon, who has lived in the area for many years and had a passion for ecology.

Expect to hike about three miles, with some uneven and muddy trails. Please bring your own lunch, snacks, and water. Toilets are available at the beginning of the trail heads and by the quarry pond. Specific directions to where we’ll meet in the park will be emailed to registered participants the week prior to the trip. You will need to provide your own transportation to and from the park. An entrance fee is required for each car entering the park, either as a single day permit or an annual membership to all Waukesha County Parks.
