Jones Island & Kaszube Park Field Trip
Wednesday, March 22, 2023 | 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
$25.00 – $35.00On this field trip, we’ll visit Jones Island and the Milwaukee Metropolitan Sewerage District. Tom Finley will meet everyone there, where we’ll be led on a tour of this fascinating facility by a member of MMSD staff. This will be a one-mile walking tour. We’ll start with an indoor presentation on the background of Jones Island and MMSD. We’ll then go outside and follow the route wastewater takes before it is returned to Lake Michigan.
MMSD requires everyone to wear long pants and closed-toed shoes, along with provided hard hats and safety glasses – no exceptions.
After the reclamation facility, Tom will lead a brief visit to Milwaukee’s smallest park – Kaszube Park, also located on the island. The remnant of a once-thriving community and fishing village, the park is less than one acre in size. The story of the Kashubian people, from northern Europe (in what is now Poland), is unique. At its height, almost 2,000 people lived, worked, and went to school on the island.
Specific details and meeting instructions will be sent out just prior to the program.
Members: $25 | Non-members: $35
