Great Cicada Symphony 2024

Saturday, July 27, 2024 | 9:00 am - 10:30 am

$17.00 – $23.00

Every 221 years, two broods of cicadas emerge simultaneously, a 13-year group and a 17-year group, making the Midwest the loudest place to live during the summer this year as trillions of cicadas appear. Wisconsin is just one of over 10 states that will host this orchestra of insects. At Schlitz Audubon, we are within the boundary to witness the emergence of one group of these cicadas called Brood XIII, the 17-year group. In addition, we will see our traditional annual cicadas as we do every year.

Join Naturalist Melanie Ziolecki who has a passion for insects as we identify the different species of cicadas, understand their brood cycle, and determine how and why they fill the warm summer air with their humming sound. We will hike and investigate the various Center habitats to possibly find these and other insects. If we can locate some, we will try to safely catch some with butterfly nets. We will also be on the lookout for their exoskeleton sheds.

Members: $17 | Non-members: $23
