Fireflies light up our summer nights. In previous years, we have marveled at hundreds of fireflies with unique flashing patterns on our Schlitz Audubon property. This year, we are thrilled to host researchers from the Milwaukee Public Museum as we partner with Dr. Zaspel, entomologist, in her study of which species of fireflies can be found in southeastern Wisconsin. Try luring in some fireflies with our “Firefly fishing pole,” and capture some of these luminescent beetles for further study. Learn how to identify and count fireflies in your own backyard for this important yet simple citizen science project with Firefly Watch. Help researchers learn more about our firefly populations, distribution and the environmental factors influencing firefly populations.
