Bird Migration
Sunday, October 27, 2024 | 8:00 am - 9:30 am
$17.00 – $23.00One of nature’s greatest migrations is taking place as millions of neotropical songbirds make their way back to their warmer wintering grounds from their breeding territories across North America. Migration season offers excellent birding opportunities due to the high volume of birds and number of species present. The Center’s diverse habitat types and location along Lake Michigan make it a stopover hotspot. Over 260 species have been recorded on the grounds with many seen only during migration.
In October, the last round of migrants such as Yellow-rumped Warblers, sparrows, raptors, kinglets, ducks and waterbirds are on the move in large numbers. October is also known as a time for many rare birds to appear in Wisconsin, off course from their usual migration routes.
This hike will be led by expert birding naturalist – Jacob Collison. We will cover bird identification by color, pattern, behavior, song, habitat preference and bird photography. In addition to migrating species, we will likely see resident bird species, mammals, reptiles and amphibians and if we are lucky a vagrant bird species. Bring your binoculars, camera, field guide or app and we will meet in the parking lot.
