Bird Conservation in Coffee

Saturday, May 27, 2023 | 8:00 am - 10:00 am

$25 – $35

Coffee is so ubiquitous that we often forget to think about what it is (it’s a seed), where it is grown (between the tropics of Capricorn and Cancer), or who grows it (people!). This ubiquity, though wonderful when in need of a quick pick-me-up, unfortunately also poses a significant deforestation threat to the lands from which coffee is derived. Coffee growing is thought to be a major contributor to the decline of migratory songbirds that we see here in Wisconsin.

Join us for a thoughtful discussion, morning bird hike, and coffee tasting during which we will consider the implications of our coffee habits on global bird populations. We’ll also learn about the tireless work that is being done to help species conservation. Enjoy a special visit from one or two of our raptor ambassadors, whose wild cousins migrate to coffee-growing regions.

Presenter Matt Ehresman is a Schlitz Audubon staff member, a Master Naturalist, and a Nature Preschool parent – and he’s also a Certified Q grader, coffee brewmaster. Accompanying Matt is Donna Miller, a local birder and a long-time Schlitz Audubon volunteer.

Members: $25 | Non-members: $35
