Summer at Schlitz Audubon
Summer is a bountiful time for Schlitz Audubon Nature Center. The prairies are completely grown up around the trails, some plants above six feet tall, and provide native habitat for Monarch Butterflies and birds that live in Wisconsin throughout the year. Trails that wind through the shaded tree canopy are an excellent way to keep cool while still enjoying the outdoors. This is the season when all the restorative work of our land management team shines, as visitors are able to experience several native environments, including dramatic ravines, restored wetlands, Lake Michigan shoreline, and ponds teeming with frogs and turtles.
Recent Trail Updates
A portion of our trail near Mystery Lake is being renovated to become ADA accessible, thanks to the generosity of funders such as the Elizabeth Elser Doolittle Charitable Trusts and Margarete and David Harvey. The trail presently under construction is near completion, and in the future will be joined by a boardwalk. This renovation is both ADA accessible and environmentally friendly. The path is made out of a durable, locally quarried rock which allows for better water absorption than asphalt and without the potential for chemicals to seep into the surrounding soil. We’re excited to share a greater portion of our land with more visitors, and to expand everyone’s access to the outdoors.
Fund for Lake Michigan Grant
Schlitz Audubon was fortunate to receive a $60,000 grant from the Fund For Lake Michigan. This grant will enable Schlitz Audubon Nature Center to develop a plan to manage stormwater, stabilize ravines, and improve habitat at its 185-acre site on the shores of Lake Michigan. The mission of the Fund for Lake Michigan is to support efforts, and in particular those in southeastern Wisconsin, that enhance the health of Lake Michigan and its shoreline and tributary river systems for the benefit of the communities and people that depend upon the system for water, recreation, and commerce.
